When you are experiencing pain, swelling, or an injury, obtaining an accurate diagnosis is an important first step toward recovery. At the CSOG Imaging Center, we offer X-ray imaging services to help evaluate a wide range of orthopaedic conditions affecting the bones and joints.

Whether you have sustained an injury during sports, experienced a fall, or are dealing with chronic joint pain, X-ray imaging provides valuable information that helps your physician determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

As part of Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, our Imaging Center supports coordinated orthopaedic care by providing diagnostic imaging that complements your clinical evaluation.

X-Ray Imaging

What Is an X-Ray?

An X-ray is a diagnostic imaging examination that uses a small amount of radiation to create images of the body's internal structures, particularly bones and joints. X-rays are often one of the first imaging tests performed because they provide valuable information about many musculoskeletal conditions.

Your physician may recommend an X-ray to evaluate injuries, investigate persistent pain, assess joint changes, or monitor healing following treatment or surgery.

What Can an X-Ray Diagnose?

  • Bone fractures
  • Stress fractures
  • Joint dislocations
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Bone tumors
  • Joint alignment abnormalities
  • Soft tissue changes
  • Certain spinal conditions
  • Bone infections
  • Healing after fractures
  • Healing following orthopedic surgery
  • Joint replacement positioning
Depending on your symptoms, your physician may recommend additional imaging, such as an MRI or CT scan, if more detailed evaluation is needed.

When Might You Need an X-Ray?

Your physician may recommend an X-ray if you experience:

  • Pain in bones or joints
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Difficulty moving an arm or leg
  • Suspected fractures
  • Persistent shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Back or neck pain
  • Foot or ankle injuries
  • Hand or wrist injuries
  • Arthritis symptoms
  • Changes in joint function
X-ray imaging often serves as an important first step in diagnosing many orthopaedic conditions.

Conditions Commonly Evaluated with X-Ray Imaging

Fractures: X-rays are commonly used to identify broken bones and determine the location and severity of a fracture.

Arthritis: X-ray imaging helps physicians evaluate joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and other changes associated with arthritis.

Sports Injuries: While many soft tissue injuries require MRI for detailed evaluation, X-rays are frequently used to assess fractures, dislocations, and other bone injuries sustained during athletic activities.

Spine Conditions: X-rays can help evaluate spinal alignment, scoliosis, degenerative changes, and certain vertebral injuries.

Follow-Up Care: Your physician may recommend follow-up X-rays to monitor bone healing after a fracture or to evaluate recovery following orthopaedic surgery.

Benefits of X-Ray Imaging

  • Quick and efficient examination
  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Valuable information for diagnosing bone and joint conditions
  • Widely used in evaluation of injuries
  • Helps physicians determine appropriate treatment
  • Can assist in monitoring healing and recovery
X-rays often provide the information needed to begin treatment promptly or determine whether additional imaging is recommended.

What to Expect During Your X-Ray Appointment

Most X-ray examinations are straightforward and take only a short time to complete.

During your visit:

  1. You may be asked to remove jewelry or other metal objects near the area being examined.
  2. A technologist will position the affected body part.
  3. Images will be taken from one or more angles.
  4. You may be asked to remain still briefly while the images are obtained.
  5. Once your examination is complete, you can usually resume your normal daily activities.
The procedure itself is painless, although positioning may cause temporary discomfort if you have an injury.

Is X-Ray Imaging Safe?

X-ray imaging uses a carefully controlled amount of radiation and is considered safe for most patients when medically appropriate. The benefits of obtaining an accurate diagnosis generally outweigh the small amount of radiation exposure associated with the examination.

If you are pregnant or believe you may be pregnant, please inform your physician and the imaging staff before your examination so appropriate precautions can be taken.
