When Do You Need an MRI?
- Physical Exam & X-Rays First: Most orthopedic issues can be evaluated through medical history, a physical exam, and standard X-rays, eliminating the initial need for an MR.
- Insurance Requirements: Insurance providers often require patients to complete standard X-rays or fail conservative treatments (such as 6 weeks of physical therapy) before authorizing an MRI.
- Immediate MRIs: Reserved for acute structural injuries suspected to require surgical intervention—such as torn Achilles tendons, acute meniscus tears, or rotator cuff tears.
- MRI Findings vs. Symptoms: Imaging often shows age-related "wear and tear" that does not match actual pain sources. Conversely, a negative MRI does not mean a patient isn't experiencing real symptoms.
